Portland traffic deaths highest in 3 decades as officials report spike in reckless driving

The perils of daily travel have been on Eric Lindsay’s mind for years.

The North Portland resident thinks about ways to make the roads safer as he’s driving, as he’s biking with his young daughter, and as he thinks about which elected leaders to support.

But the subject became deeply personal for Lindsay last year, when he witnessed a car strike a pedestrian in Southeast Portland. Lindsay stopped to try and help the man, later identified as Joseph Reilly, and held him in his arms as he died.
